Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., on Thursday called for extending temporary protected status (TPS) to Haitians in the United States after the Supreme Court paved the way for the Trump administration to end it.

The justices issued their decision on Thursday morning, finding that the statute authorizing TPS did not permit judicial review of presidential discretion in ending it. Lawler, for his part, warned that the removal of the roughly 350,000 Haitians on TPS would cause disruptions to major industries and send them back to a country not prepared to accept them.

The conditions in Haitian, he said, were "a humanitarian and political disaster." He also highlighted the volume of Haitian TPS holders working in the American healthcare system.

"I’m asking the administration to allow for an orderly process by which Haitian TPS holders can maintain their work authorization while their immigration cases are adjudicated over the next six months, if the revocation of TPS moves forward," he added.

Lawler's X post became the subject of a "ratio," a development in which a post generates more comments than likes, usually suggesting strong disapproval of the content. As of press time, the post had 478 likes and more than 4,000 comments.
