Luigi Mangione, who has been accused of fatally shooting the late UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, released his first public statement on Friday since his arrest last year.

Mangione has been charged in New York with one count of first degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and a litany of gun possession charges, over the Dec. 4 incident. He also faces federal charges, and charges in Pennsylvania. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The suspect said that he was "grateful" for the fans he has received since his arrest, who have written to him in prison. The statement was posted on a new website that was launched by his legal defense team to combat misinformation and provide updates on his cases.

“I am overwhelmed by – and grateful for – everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support,” Mangione wrote. “Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC from across the country, and around the globe. While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive."

The statement comes just days after he accepted more than $300,000 that was raised by over 10,000 supporters, according to the New York Post.

Mangione, who allegedly slammed the health care industry in a manifesto, was arrested in Pennsylvania in December after a five-day manhunt. He is being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center.
