Texas' Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton sued the developers behind the controversial Muslim East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) city on Friday, accusing them of running an illegal securities and land development scheme.

Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott halted construction on the project earlier this year because of federal and state probes into the city, which comes after Texans voiced concern that it would exclude non-Muslims and could promote Sharia Law.

Paxton accused EPIC, Community Capital Partners (“CCP”), and several of their leaders of misleading donors by indicating in certain promotional material that the city would be reserved for Muslims specifically and described the development as the “epicenter of Islam in North America.”

The attorney general also accused the defendants of misrepresenting how funds would be used by allegedly funneling some of the money into their own pockets.

“The leaders behind EPIC City have engaged in a radical plot to destroy hundreds of acres of beautiful Texas land and line their own pockets,” Paxton said. “I will relentlessly bring the full force of the law against anyone who thinks they can ignore the rules and hurt Texans.

"The unlawful land project known as EPIC City will be stopped, and those responsible will be barred from ever creating another fraudulent operation like this again," he added.

The project, which would encompass over 400 acres in Hunt and Collin Counties, is expected to include a new mosque, over 1,000 single- and multifamily homes, a K-12 Islamist faith-based school, an outreach center and a community college.
