Trump refiles $15 billion defamation lawsuit against New York Times
President Trump claims that The New York Times and some of its reporters defamed him in their reckless disregard for the truth in two articles and a book published ahead of the 2024 presidential election
President Trump refiled his defamation lawsuit for $15 billion against The New York Times, after a federal judge dismissed a previous filing, saying that its length needed to be shortened.
In the new lawsuit filed Thursday, Trump claims the news outlet and some of its reporters defamed him in their reckless disregard for the truth in two articles and a book published ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
The 40-page lawsuit claims that defamatory statements were made about Trump "with actual malice," disparaging his "hard-earned professional reputation, which he painstakingly built for decades as a private citizen before becoming President of the United States, including as a successful businessman and as star of the most successful reality television show of all-time— The Apprentice."
The articles and book implied that Trump didn't work much and was handed a lot of money, which led to his success, according to the filing.
“These breaches of journalistic ethics are further proven by the Times’ enthusiastic aiding and abetting of the partisan effort to falsely link Russian interference to President Trump’s victory in the 2016 Presidential Election, which is well on its way to becoming one of the most profoundly disturbing criminal political scandals in American history,” the lawsuit reads.
The Times has said Trump's lawsuit is “without merit,” and executive editor Joe Kahn said earlier this summer that the newspaper has no intention of settling the case.
When the judge threw out Trump's prior lawsuit, his attorneys told The Hill news outlet that they would “continue to hold the Fake News accountable through this powerhouse lawsuit against the New York Times, its reporters, and Penguin Random House, in accordance with the judge’s direction on logistics.”
