A Wisconsin man was charged on Monday with forging letters that threatened to assassinate President Donald Trump and criticized his immigration policies, which he allegedly attempted to pass off as coming from an illegal Mexican migrant.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the arrest of the illegal migrant last month, but was urged to correct the matter after an investigation found the migrant could not have written the letters because he did not speak or write English well. A handwriting sample also proved the migrant did not write the letters.

The new suspect in the case is Demetric Scott, who allegedly sent multiple letters to officials, allegedly posing as migrant Ramón Morales Reyes, in order to get him deported before Morales Reyes could testify in a robbery case against him.

Scott has been charged with felony witness intimidation, identity theft and two counts of bail jumping, NBC News reported.

Law enforcement officials said Morales Reyes notified them of Scott's potential scheme when they asked if he knew anyone who would target him. Following Morales Reyes' suggestion, law enforcement found that Scott made several calls about mailing letters, according to a criminal complaint.

Milwaukee police officers said Scott has since admitted to writing the letters, and that his plan was not to attack the president but to deport Morales Reyes in order to keep him from testifying in the July trial.

Morales Reyes' attorney Kime Abduli said the migrant is still in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, and is in removal proceedings. He is expected to remain in custody for now because he allegedly has a previous criminal record.
