Bill Clinton praises Trump for Israel-Hamas peace deal, says he and others 'deserve great credit'
"President Trump and his administration, Qatar, and other regional actors deserve great credit for keeping everyone engaged until the agreement was reached," Clinton said in a statement shared on X.
Former President Bill Clinton on Monday gave rare praise to President Donald Trump for getting all the remaining Israeli hostages freed by Hamas and securing a peace deal that aims to eventually end the war in Gaza.
Clinton said Trump and regional leaders from Middle Eastern countries like Qatar and Egypt deserve credit for securing the ceasefire and getting the hostages released. The Middle Eastern countries helped mediate the ceasefire agreement.
"The horrors of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and the conflict they reignited have resulted in unbearable human loss," Clinton said in a statement shared on X. "It has been hard to watch and nearly impossible to rationalize.
"I’m grateful that a ceasefire has taken hold, that the last 20 hostages have been freed, and that desperately needed aid has begun to flow into Gaza," he continued. "President Trump and his administration, Qatar, and other regional actors deserve great credit for keeping everyone engaged until the agreement was reached."
The former U.S. president urged Israel and Hamas to use the momentum of the deal to turn it into "lasting peace that provides the dignity and security of both Palestinians and Israelis."
Clinton added that he believes lasting peace is possible if both sides want it.
The comment comes after Clinton blasted Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in June, stating that he did not believe they were serious about bringing peace to the region. He has also criticized Israel for killing Palestinian civilians while trying to eliminate Hamas.
"We have to convince our friends in the Middle East that we’ll stand with them and try to protect them," Clinton said at the time. "But choosing undeclared wars in which the primary victims are civilians, who are not politically involved, one way or the other, who just want to live decent lives, is not a very good solution."
