The governments of the West African countries of Burkina Faso and Mali this week announced they were imposing travel bans on Americans in response to the United States' travel ban on their citizens last month.

The two countries were part of President Donald Trump's latest travel ban that included five countries in the aftermath of multiple terror attacks that occurred globally recently, including in Australia and Syria.

The West African countries said separately they were imposing the travel ban in accordance with the "principle of reciprocity,” and would apply the same restrictions on Americans that were imposed on their countries, per the New York Times

U.S. travel advisories for Burkina Faso and Mali also now warn citizens not to travel to the countries because of the threat of terrorism, crime and kidnapping.

The president signed the initial travel ban of his second administration in June, which barred citizens from Afghanistan, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

The travel ban was extended on Dec. 16 to include citizens from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, the Palestinian Authority, South Sudan, and Syria, according to the White House.

Niger has also imposed a travel ban on Americans in light of the ban on citizens from its country. The travel bans are in effect immediately.
