State Department lifts sanctions on aide to Hungary's Viktor Orban
Rogan was added to the Treasury Department's "Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List," on January 7.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce on Tuesday announced that the department has lifted sanctions on senior Hungarian official Antal Rogan, who is an important aide to the country's leader Viktor Orban.
Bruce said Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to his counterpart in Hungary about the decision, which removes Rogan from the Treasury's" Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List." The official was added to the list by the Biden administration in January.
The spokeswoman said the decision was made because the designation was "inconsistent with U.S. foreign policy interests."
The designation was tied to allegations of corruption within Orban's administration, including allegations that Orban himself was corrupt. The prime minister has repeatedly denied the allegations, per The Guardian.
Rogan has run Orban's Cabinet office since 2015.
