The Treasury Department put out an advisory Friday warning American shippers not to pay Iran its toll for going through the Strait of Hormuz or else they could face possible sanctions.

Iran has imposed taxes for safe passage through the strait, forcing ships to pay a $1 fee for every oil barrel on a tanker that is trying to get through the strait and some ships have paid up to $2 million in toll fees so far, according to The Hill.

“U.S. persons and U.S.-owned or -controlled foreign entities are generally prohibited under U.S. sanctions from engaging in transactions with the Government of Iran, including the provision or receipt of services, unless exempt or authorized by [the Office of Foreign Assets Control],” the advisory reads.

The department did not specify how much the U.S. sanctions would be or whether any specific ship had paid the toll.

The fees come amid a ceasefire in the U.S., Israeli and Iranian conflict in the Middle East. The conflict began in February.

President Donald Trump has warned Iran to stop the high tolls, but the country has not obeyed so far. The Trump administration has also rejected multiple peace deals that would reopen the strait but did not touch Iran's nuclear program.
