Trump Justice Department opens probe into former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo: Report
The investigation is allegedly following up on a referral from House Oversight Chairman James Comer, who has repeatedly asked the Justice Department to investigate statements Cuomo made to a House subcommittee years ago.
The Justice Department has reportedly opened an investigation into former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a disgraced Democrat who led the state during the COVID-19 pandemic, sources told the New York Times on Tuesday.
The investigation is allegedly following up on a referral from House Oversight Chairman James Comer, who has repeatedly asked the Justice Department to investigate inaccurate statements Cuomo made to a House subcommittee investigating his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
The DOJ and the FBI have declined to comment on or confirm the investigation, which sources told the outlet began last month under former interim U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Ed Martin.
Cuomo's spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, questioned the timing of the investigation in a comment to the Times, which comes as New York City prepares for its next mayoral election. The primary for the election will take place next month, and Cuomo is seeking the Democratic nomination. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is running as an independent.
“We have never been informed of any such matter, so why would someone leak it now?” Azzopardi said. “The answer is obvious: This is lawfare and election interference plain and simple — something President Trump and his top Department of Justice officials say they are against.”
Azzopardi said the former governor would be willing to testify in front of Congress again in order to clarify any previous comments, which were related to his role in drafting a New York State Health Department report on nursing home deaths caused by the pandemic.
The investigation comes after the same DOJ dismissed corruption charges against Adams last month, who was accused of accepting illegal campaign donations from the Turkish government.
