Former FBI and CIA director William Webster dies at 101
“The proud and loving family of the Honorable William H. Webster sadly announces the death of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and patriot,” the family said.
William Webster, the only man who has ever run both the FBI and the CIA, has died at the age of 101-years-old, his family confirmed in a statement on Friday.
Webster was tapped by then-President Jimmy Carter to lead the FBI in 1978 after its reputation was damaged by revelations of corruption in the bureau and unauthorized spying on Americans, per CNN.
When he concluded his nine-year commitment at the bureau, former President Ronald Reagan chose Webster to lead the CIA.
“The proud and loving family of the Honorable William H. Webster sadly announces the death of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and patriot,” the family said.
It was not immediately clear exactly when Webster died, or what the former director's official cause of death was.
