Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday afternoon alerted students to an active shooting situation on the university's campus near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) main campus.

Local news outlets have reported that one police officer was killed in the shooting, along with the suspected shooter.

No details on the suspect's identity or motive has been released so far, but the lockdowns on both the CDC campus and Emory University have been lifted, per CNN.

“There is no ongoing threat to the Emory Campus or the surrounding neighborhood. The incident involved a single shooter, who is now deceased,” the police department posted on X. “One law enforcement official was injured in the course of the response.”

Students and residents are still instructed to stay away from the scene while the investigation is ongoing.

"Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians," Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp posted on X. "Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are.

"Marty, the girls, and I are thankful for all those who answer the call to serve and who protect their fellow Georgians," he continued. "We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center."

CDC Director Susan Monarez released a statement Friday night, lamenting the death of the police officer and the impact the shooting had on the agency's campus.

"We at [CDC] are heartbroken by today’s attack on our Roybal Campus," Monarez said. "A courageous local law enforcement officer gave his life, and another was injured, after a gunman opened fire on at least four CDC buildings.

"Our top priority is the safety and well-being of everyone at CDC," she continued. "We are actively coordinating with federal, state, and local partners to fully investigate the shooter and this tragic crime. We are deeply grateful to Governor Kemp, Georgia residents, and the American people for standing with us during this difficult time."

The shooting took place two days after a gunman injured five people at the Fort Stewart Army base in Georgia.
