Republicans and Democrats in Alaska are increasing pressure on President Trump not to rename Denali, North America's tallest mountain peak that is in their state.

On Monday, the state's Democrat-controlled House voted in favor of keeping the name.

The vote took place one week after Trump signed an executive order to give Denali the new name of Mount McKinley.

The Interior Department announced last week that they were already working to implement Trump's requested name change.

Last month, GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski opposed the proposed change, saying "You can’t improve upon the name that Alaska’s Koyukon Athabascans bestowed on North America’s tallest peak, Denali – the Great One. For years, I advocated in Congress to restore the rightful name for this majestic mountain to respect Alaska’s first people who have lived on these lands for thousands of years. This is an issue that should not be relitigated.”
