Explosion, fire at Chevron refinery in California
The city of El Segundo said that there was no threat to the public or evacuation orders
An explosion at the Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo, Calif., on Thursday sent huge flames into the night sky across the South Bay.
Sections of nearby Manhattan Beach had shelter-in-place orders in effect until 2 a.m. However, there was no threat to the public or evacuation orders, according to the Los Angeles Times. There have been no immediate reports of injury.
The explosion occurred around 9:30 p.m., but fire crews had it largely contained in about an hour, said Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell. Still, officials will continue to monitor air-quality conditions and residents in the immediate area, south of downtown Los Angeles and along the coast, are being advised to remain indoors if possible, she also said.
El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel said that the fire stayed on refinery grounds and that all personnel had been accounted for. However, he said that the cause of the fire remained unclear.
