New York City (NYC) first responders on Thursday evacuated an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Manhattan, after envelopes containing suspicious white powder were discovered in the federal building.

The New York Fire Department (FDNY) said the powder was found on the 9th floor of the Jacob K. Javits Federal Office Building at 26 Federal Plaza near Foley Square, the New York Post reported. No injuries have been reported.

“New Yorkers, I have been preliminarily briefed on the matter unfolding at 26 Federal Plaza where envelopes containing white powder were discovered,” NYC's Democratic Mayor Eric Adams posted on X. “I want to also reassure you that there are no known injuries at this time.”

The white powder is currently being tested by the fire department's Hazmat team and an investigation into the powder is ongoing.

This has stirred memories of the weaponized anthrax that was mailed to media outlets and government officials after the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
