New York firefighter dies battling Brooklyn blaze

A New York City firefighter died on Sunday after he was critically injured when the Brooklyn building he was fighting a blaze in collapsed. 

Timothy Klein, 31, was a six-year veteran of the department, the agency said on Instagram. Klein responded to a three-alarm fire on Avenue N in Brooklyn earlier in the afternoon. 

Klein "was critically injured in a collapse inside the building while he was bravely fighting the fire," the Fire Deparment of New York wrote.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams visited Brooklyn's Brookdale Hospital to be briefed on the situation earlier in the afternoon, the mayor's press secretary, Fabien Levy, said.

Five other FDNY members have non-life-threatening injuries from the three-alarm conflagration, authorities stated.

"It gives us great pain and sorrow to announce that New York City has lost one of its bravest, Timothy Klein," Mayor Adams said according to ABC 7. "A six and a half years as a firefighter, 31-years-old, coming from a rich tradition of dad and other relatives who are firefighters."

Other New York City officials sent their condolences as well.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez tweeted: "My heart is with the relatives and friends of Firefighter Timothy Klein, who lost his life today while bravely battling a fire in Canarsie. The entire @FDNY family is in my thoughts as we mourn this tragic loss."

The New York Police Department said it is "saddened by the loss."

"Firefighter Klein died serving the people of NYC and will forever be a hero," the department wrote. "We stand with our brothers and sisters at the FDNY as they grieve for their brother and continue to watch over the city."
