NY Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch will remain in post under incoming Mamdani administration
“I’ve spoken to Mayor-elect Mamdani several times, and I’m ready to serve with honor as his Police Commissioner,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch has agreed to remain in her role when New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani takes office in January.
“I’ve spoken to Mayor-elect Mamdani several times, and I’m ready to serve with honor as his Police Commissioner,” said Tisch, according to Politico. “That’s because he and I share many of the same public safety goals for New York City: lowering crime, making communities safer, rooting out corruption, and giving our officers the tools, support, and resources they need to carry out their noble work.”
Mamdani said in October that he planned to ask Tisch to stay, but they didn't meet for the first time until Nov. 14, 10 days after Mamdani’s election victory.
Tisch believes criminal justice laws passed by state legislators have limited the NYPD’s ability to fight crime and supports the use of a gang database that has been criticized by the New York City Council.
She alluded to those differences in a mass email sent to NYPD officers ahead of Wednesday’s announcement.
“Do the Mayor-elect and I agree on everything? No, we don’t. But in speaking with him, it’s clear that we share broad and crucial priorities: the importance of public safety, the need to continue driving down crime and the need to maintain stability and order across the department,” Tisch wrote. “We also agree that you deserve the city’s respect and support.”
Tisch was appointed NYPD commissioner in November 2024, after the department had gone through multiple commissioners in three years under Democrat Mayor Eric Adams.
“I have admired her work cracking down on corruption in the upper echelons of the police department, driving down crime in New York City, and standing up for New Yorkers in the face of authoritarianism,” Mamdani said Wednesday about Tisch. “Together, we will deliver a city where rank-and-file police officers and the communities they serve alike are safe, represented, and proud to call New York their home.”
