A shooting occurred after a high school homecoming football game in the Mississippi Delta town of Leland, which left four people dead and four others wounded, according to Mississippi State Senator Derrick Simmons.
The shooting occurred late Friday night and the cause of the shooting remains unclear and under investigation.
Sen. Simmons, who represents the area, confirmed the casualties in a statement to The Associated Press, citing updates from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies.
Four of the wounded victims were initially taken to a hospital in nearby Greenville before being airlifted to a larger facility in Jackson, the state capital.
The conditions of the wounded victims have not yet been released.
“This is heartbreaking for our community,” Simmons said. “What should have been a night of pride and unity ended in unimaginable violence.”
Local officials have not released the names of the victims, and suspects have not yet been identified as of early Saturday afternoon. It is unclear if arrests have been made.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation and urging anyone with information to come forward.
