Kemp declares state of emergency amid violent protests following Atlanta police shooting

Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp has declared state of emergency after violent protests broke out in Atlanta over the weekend after a police-involved shooting. 

The state of emergency is last through Feb. 9.

Kemp has activated roughly 1,000 members of the Georgia National Guard to try to help restore order, citing "unlawful assemblage, violence, overt threats of violence, disruption of the peace and tranquility of this state and danger to existing persons or property.” 

The protests started peacefully after a state trooper on Jan. 19 fatally shot 26-year-old Manuel Teran, then erupted over the weekend.

Atlanta Democrat Mayor Andre Dickens said that some of the protesters were carrying explosives. The protests got violent reportedly after some protesters set police cars on fire and threw bricks into buildings.
