The University of Massachusetts Lowell on Wednesday sent out a "shelter in place" alert to community members after a man was reported on campus with what is believed to be a gun.
No shots have been reported so far, but authorities are instructing the public to stay away from the Riverview Suites on the university's South Campus while police investigate, NBC Boston reported.
Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Lori Trahan said that she is monitoring the situation at the university and urged students and faculty at the school to follow local law enforcement directions.
"I'm actively monitoring this situation and in touch with local officials," she posted on X. If you are in Lowell, please follow directions from [Lowell police] and [the university]."
The alert occurred on the first day of classes at the university, but classes and campus activities have since been canceled.
