National Weather Service begins changing 'Lake Ontario' to 'Lake America' on maps, weather forecasts

The National Weather Service announced Monday that it is beginning the process of renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America" on all of its maps and weather forecasts.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month directing the Department of Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to make the name change official within 30 days, after trade negotiations with Canada fell apart. 

The change is expected to impact the NWS' open waters forecasts, forecasts for the Niagara River and the surrounding region in New York, according to USA Today.

"NWS is in the process of implementing Executive Order 14422, 'Honoring the American History of the Great Lakes and Renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America,'" the service said. "Work is underway to update naming conventions as quickly as possible on online maps, weather products, websites and other materials across the NWS. 

"Caution will be exercised to avoid disruptions to operations," the service added.

The move comes after the president renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America."

Google and Apple Maps already implemented the Lake America name change into their products earlier this month.
