Federal agents on Tuesday used tear gas to disperse a large crowd in Chicago that was protesting federal involvement in the city over its high crime rate, and protesting agents who were conducting immigration enforcement operations.

The tear gas was used after Border Patrol agents were involved in a car chase earlier Tuesday, which resulted in the driver crashing with a federal vehicle and the suspects fleeing the scene on foot. The Border Patrol agents also arrested multiple protesters who disrupted the operation.

It is not clear if anyone was injured in the crash. The driver and passenger of the vehicle, who are both allegedly in the country illegally, were both later arrested, according to the Chicago Sun Times

The crowd later gathered at the scene of the crash to protest the operation, where tear gas was deployed, and four protesters were arrested. The tear gas was used after protesters allegedly threw objects at federal agents and 13 Chicago police officers were exposed to the tear gas. Chicago police were at the protest to help deescalate tensions but did not help federal law enforcement with its operation.

The interaction comes after President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to Illinois as part of his crackdown on illegal immigration and crime in major urban areas.
