The United States Northern Command on Thursday announced that 200 Marines will be deployed to Florida to help with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and activities in the region.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approved the Department of Homeland Security's request for military assistance with carrying out raids in Florida, Louisiana and Texas in May. A total of 700 active, National Guard, and Reserve forces will be sent to the three states.

Northern Command said that the 200 Marines being deployed to Florida will come from the Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, and will help with administrative and logistical capabilities at locations as directed by ICE.

"These Marines are the first wave of U.S. Northern Command’s support of this ICE mission," Northern Command said in a press release. "Service members participating in this mission will perform strictly non-law enforcement duties within ICE facilities. Their roles will focus on administrative and logistical tasks, and they are specifically prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody or involvement in any aspect of the custody chain."

The Trump administration previously sent Marines to Los Angeles in order to help protect federal buildings from anti-ICE rioters. The administration's use of the military in immigration enforcement activities has been panned by the left.

Thousands of service members have also been deployed to the U.S.' southern border with Mexico to assist with wall construction and border enforcement.
