Trump insists Iran wants a deal 'quickly and badly'

President Donald Trump on Monday insisted that Iran sought a deal to end the war, but said he had yet to decide whether to resume negotiations.

"The failing Nation of Iran wants to make a deal, quickly and badly. I will determine whether or not the U.S.A. will choose to engage - The concept of which we are open to," he posted on Truth Social.

Since the conflict began in late February, Trump has repeatedly claimed to have already won and regularly insisted that Iran was on the brink of accepting U.S. demands.

Fighting has resumed in recent weeks following the collapse of negotiations, which culminated in a short-lived memorandum of understanding (MOU) that was meant to serve as a prelude to a final deal.

Trump has sought a commitment from Iran to never possess a nuclear weapon, though Tehran has not been willing to agree as of yet. The president's assertion that Iran wants to negotiate comes amid significant volatility in energy markets, with Brent Crude reaching as high as $110 per barrel.

U.S. 10-year Treasury yields, moreover, hit 5% for the first time since 2007 on Monday. Driving much of the tumult has been the recent Houthi offensive in Yemen that saw the Iran-backed group oust a Saudi-supported force from strongholds on the Red Sea coastline.

The Houthis have also directly struck Saudi Arabian oil infrastructure, most notably hitting a pipeline that spans from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea.
