Trump officials join ICE agents in Chicago for deportation efforts
Attorney General promises support for cooperating local officials and prosecution for those who do not.
Trump administration officials including "border czar" Tom Hoffman and acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove have joined ICE agents in Chicago as deportation of illegal aliens begin in the city.
Bove encouraged Chicago officials to cooperate with the process, according to a public statement shared with the Associated Press.
“We will support everyone at the federal, state, and local levels who joins this critical mission to take back our communities,” Bove said. “We will use all available tools to address obstruction and other unlawful impediments to our efforts to protect the homeland. Most importantly, we will not rest until the work is done.”
Bove also issued a memo on January 21 stating that the U.S. Attorney's office will investigate and prosecute local officials who fail to comply with federal immigration law.
The memo also instructed the office's Civil Division to take legal action against state and local laws prohibiting cooperation with federal immigration officials. Chicago Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson has criticized the deportation plans and told city police officials to refrain from assisting in ICE operations in accordance with the Illinois Trust Act.
Media personality "Dr. Phil" McGraw also joined ICE agents in Chicago on Sunday to film arrests and conduct interviews as part of his show.
