Trump confirms Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will be invited to White House
Whether Trump will invite the Eagles and whether the team will go has become a political football.
President Donald Trump says the Philadelphia Eagles will be invited to the White House, perhaps ending speculations about when the Super Bowl champs will be invited and accepted at the White House.
"We're going to do it sometime today," Trump said Tuesday, extending the traditional invitation to the winning team. "They deserve to be down here."
The controversy started after US Sun reported that "a source at the Eagles" allegedly said that the team might refuse Trump's invitation to the White House because Trump previously opposed NFL players kneeling "during the national anthem."
Trump spoke after two of the best NFL reporters, based on sources, said the Eagles would be "honored" to attend.
"The #Eagles would be honored to visit The White House, team sources say," NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on X. "It’s one of the aspects of winning they are excited about and look forward to receiving the invitation."
ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter said the team "is planning on visiting the White House this off-season and looks forward to receiving its invitation."
Many people criticized the team's alleged decision, with political commentator Megyn Kelly being the most well-known example of the backlash on X.
"SAME. GO F YOURSELVES EAGLES. My husband is a fan, so I got on board, but F this BS," she wrote.
