President Trump calls National Guard shooting 'act of terror' and 'crime against humanity'
"The hearts of all Americans tonight are with those two members of the West Virginia National Guard and their families, the love of our entire country is pointing to them, lifting them up in our prayers," he said.
President Donald Trump delivered remarks Wednesday night on the shooting of two National Guard members, calling the attack an "act of terror," and a "crime against humanity."
The president's comment was in response to a shooting that occurred near the White House in Washington, D.C., earlier in the day. The two West Virginia National Guard members are in critical condition and the suspected shooter was also injured and is in custody.
The suspect is believed to be an Afghan national who entered the U.S. with a special visa in 2021 in connection with the end of Afghan war and was living in Washington state. Washington, D.C., police believe the suspect acted alone.
"This heinous assault was an act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror," Trump said in a video from his Mar-a-Lago resort. "It was a crime against our entire nation. It was a crime against humanity.
"The hearts of all Americans tonight are with those two members of the West Virginia National Guard and their families, the love of our entire country is pointing to them, lifting them up in our prayers."
Trump blasted the Biden administration for allowing the suspect into the country, along with 20 million other "unknown and unvetted foreigners."
"This attack underscores the single greatest national security threat facing our nation," Trump stated. "No country can tolerate such a risk to our very survival ... We must now reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here or add benefit to our country. If they can't love our country, we don't want them.
"America will never bend and never yield in the face of terror, and at the same time, we will not be deterred from the mission the service members were so nobly fulfilling," he added.
