Trump tells Japan, S Korea renegotiate trade deal by Aug 1 or face 25% tariff increase
Trump sent the letters to the leaders of the respective countries, then posted them on Truth Social.
President Donald Trump on Monday added public pressure on key U.S. trading partners Japan and South Korea to renegotiate their respective trade deals or face a 25% tariff as of August 1.
Trump sent the letters to the leaders of the respective countries, then posted them on Truth Social.
In the two nearly-identical letters, Trump takes issue with the trade deficits the U.S. has with each country, according to CNN.
The president sent out similar letters to seven other countries later Monday, which featured the new tariff rate for each country.
The new rates are:
- 25% for Tunisia
- 30% for Bosnia and Herzegovina
- 32% for Indonesia
- 35% for Bangladesh
- 35% for Serbia
- 36% for Cambodia
- 36% for Thailand.
Trump also signed an executive order on Monday that extends the pause on reciprocal tariffs from July 9 to August 1.
