A White House meeting between Congressional leaders, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance on Monday failed to produce a deal that will avert a government shutdown.

The 2025 fiscal year is set to end on Tuesday, meaning a shutdown would take place as soon as Wednesday morning.

The House has already passed a bill to keep the government funded through late November, but the Senate failed to pass the measure along party lines. The White House has warned of mass layoffs if the shutdown takes effect.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters that there was still too much of a gap between Democratic and Republican priorities to reach a deal.

“Their bill has not one iota of Democratic input,” Schumer said. “That is never how we’ve done this before.”

Vance blamed Democrats for the failure to reach a deal, stating that Democrats refuse to "do the right thing."
