DOJ widens IRS settlement to prevent tax probes into Trump companies
The expansion represents a significant increase in protections for Trump and his assets.
The Department of Justice on Tuesday announced a widening of its settlement with the IRS over the leak of President Donald Trump's tax returns to also require that the agency not pursue tax claims against the president or his companies.
Earlier this week, the DOJ announced the creation of an "anti-weaponization fund" to compensate victims of perceived political persecution under the Biden administration after Trump dropped his $10 billion suit against the IRS.
The DOJ provided a supplementary document on Tuesday, stating that the IRS is "forever barred and precluded from prosecuting or pursuing, any and all claims, counterclaims, causes of action...." against Trump and "trusts, parent, sister, or related companies, affiliates, and subsidiaries..."
The expansion represents a significant increase in protections for Trump and his assets. After leaving office the first time, he faced several state and local inquiries into his personal finances. While this agreement would not prevent such actions in the future, it will limit the ability of a subsequent Democratic administration to pursue comparable action.
