GOP declines to hold vote on Democrat-backed resolution that would force Trump to end war in Iran
The House had scheduled a vote on the Democrat-backed measure, but according to Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., who sponsored the bill, the GOP worried they might not have the votes to defeat it.
Republicans declined Wednesday to hold a vote on a resolution that would have forced President Donald Trump to end the war in Iran, postponing future attempts at such legislation until June.
The House had scheduled a vote on the Democrat-backed measure, but according to Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., who sponsored the bill, the GOP worried they might not have the votes to defeat it.
“We had the votes without question, and they knew it, and as a result they’re playing a political game," Meeks told the Associated Press.
Republicans in the Senate are also gathering support to defeat a similar measure, which advanced to a final vote earlier this week. That war powers resolution had the support of four Republican senators, and three others were absent from the vote.
