Texas GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales said Monday he will file his retirement from the House of Representatives when it returns Tuesday, which comes just hours after California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell said he would resign from the chamber.

Swalwell and Gonzales both face sexual misconduct allegations and Gonzales has acknowledged he had an affair with a former staffer who later committed suicide. The acknowledgment and backlash prompted him to end his reelection campaign last month.

A second former staffer accused Gonzales earlier this month of seeking a sexual relationship with her in 2020.

"There is a season for everything and God has a plan for us all," Gonzales said on X. "When Congress returns tomorrow, I will file my retirement from office. It has been my privilege to serve the great people of Texas."

Both men made the decision to resign or retire from Congress after several lawmakers called for their expulsion. Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said Monday she believes she had the numbers to remove both lawmakers.

It was not immediately clear when Gonzales' last day in office would be, but the filing will come after lawmakers return from their Spring break.
