Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday indicated that a deal to end the Iran war would likely require additional time, despite President Donald Trump's contention that the deal was mostly complete.

His remarks came as the U.S. launched a series of strikes on the Iranian coast against forces allegedly attempting to place mines in the critical waterway.

"That may take a little while, I mean, a few more days," Rubio told reporters. "I think it’s a lot of talking back and forth going on about specific language in the initial document."

Trump, for his part, has insisted that Iran would have to give up its nuclear ambitions as part of any agreement, a concession the Tehran government has not yet committed to.

The Iranians, for their part, have sought to legitimize their control of the Strait of Hormuz, their retention of a ballistic missile arsenal, and to secure sanctions relief.

Fighting began in late February with join U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
