Eight people were shot in Brooklyn Saturday night, including four children, as they were out to enjoy watching the Fourth of July fireworks.

Police rushed to the scene to help the victims. The shots were fired at around 10:35 local time as people were gathered to see a fireworks display from the boardwalk in Coney Island, according to the New York Post.

The identity and number of the shooters is not known. This is an area known for violence, according to residents of the Seapark Apartments, where the shootings apparently took place.

The four children who were shot, all males, were ages 14, 12, 7 and 6. Among the four adults were two women, ages 25 and 21, and two men, ages 37 and 33. All are in stable condition except for the 21-year-old woman, who is in critical condition.

Seven of the victims are in stable condition, while the 21-year-old female is in critical condition.

A witness who lives in the same building said, “I came home to have fun and now this? This building always has some trouble.”
