Hero dad who stopped school shooter isn't seeking recognition, family says
Kaylub Giamanco heard gunshots outside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, while driving home for his lunch break. He followed the gunman into the school's special education room, where police say he fatally shot the school shooter, who had killed four people.
Kaylub Giamanco, the hero father who stopped a school shooter and likely saved lives, was driving home for his lunch break when he heard gunshots outside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.
He followed the gunman into the school's special education room, where police say he fatally shot the school shooter, who had killed four people and injured two others, the New York Post reported.
Police have identified John J. Griffin, 16, as the gunman.
Giamanco's brave actions have been widely praised. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said, "To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life: Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well."
Despite the appreciation and attention, his family said he wants to keep a low profile.
"He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support," the family said in a statement, CBS News reported.
Giamanco is a father of two girls who attend the school where the shooting took place, and he works as a carpenter.
Kaylub Giamanco, 36, was identified as the good Samaritan who took down Griffin. His brother, Kyle Giamanco, told NBC News, that Kaylub is avoiding publicity because he doesn't feel like a hero. He feels guilty he didn't save more people, Kyle said.
Kenda Freeman, who identified herself as Kaylub's mom, told The Post that she is "super proud" of her son's quick thinking.
“He is absolutely a hero. … It’s not an easy time, and he’s going through a lot. … I’m super proud of him, and I couldn’t ask for more,” said Freeman.
Three students — ages 5, 8 and 11 — were killed in the shooting, along with a teacher. Besides the 7-year-old, a teacher, 54, is in critical condition in the hospital, according to media reports.
