The FBI on Tuesday released its 2024 "Crimes in the Nation" report, which noted that violent crime was down nationwide last year compared to 2023, including murder and non-negligent manslaughter, which dropped nearly 15%.

The report is an accumulation of data reported by more than 16,000 state, county, city, university and college, and tribal law enforcement agencies. The data covers a combined 95.6% of the United States population.

The bureau noted in a press release that murder and non-negligent manslaughter was down 14.9% in 2024, rape was down an estimated 5.2%, aggravated assault was down 3% and robberies were down 8.9% last year compared to the year before.

"The FBI’s crime statistics estimates, based on reported data, show a violent crime occurred, on average, every 25.9 seconds in 2024," the bureau said in the press release. "The breakdown shows on average a murder occurred every 31.1 minutes and a rape occurred every 4.1 minutes.

"National violent crime decreased an estimated 4.5% in 2024 compared to 2023 estimates," it added.

The report was based on national statics rather than a breakdown of crimes in specific cities.

The downward trend appears to be continuing under the Trump administration this year, according to CBS News, with the homicide rate continuing to decline in the first six months of 2025.

"We are not letting up. We have multiple operations going on nationwide to clear violent criminal trash off of your streets," Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino said on X. "We will be updating you throughout the summer on arrest numbers from operation 'Summer Heat' as we work with our state and local partners to make American streets the safest they’ve ever been."
