A shooting Wednesday evening at a funeral at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Salt Lake City killed two people and injured six, according to police.

People were gathered outside the church when the shooting occurred, Fox News reported.

As of Thursday morning, there were no named suspects or arrests in connection with the incident.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement that they are aware of a "serious incident" that occurred outside the church as a memorial service was being held in the chapel but deferred to law enforcement until more information was available.

"The Church is cooperating with law enforcement and is grateful for the efforts of first responders," the church stated. "Until more information is available, all questions about this incident are being directed to the Salt Lake City Police Department. We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy and express deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind."

The department said that of the six injured, three were listed in critical condition. They noted that some of the victims were transported by private vehicle to a local hospital before officers arrived on scene.

"The suspects are still outstanding, but our officers have obtained solid leads and are working to locate those involved," the police department posted on X late Wednesday.

"Join me in praying for the victims of such senseless violence and all the families of this church," Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, posted on X on Wednesday. "Please contact local law enforcement if you have any information about the perpetrators."

FBI Salt Lake City said in a statement that it is aware of the incident and is offering assistance to local law enforcement.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Denver Field Division Office posted on X that special agents "are responding to a reported shooting incident in the 600 block of N. Redwood Rd. to assist local law enforcement in their investigation."

Police urged the public to stay away from the area where the shooting occurred, and said they do not have a detailed description of a suspect's vehicle, but that officers are searching the area from Redwood Road to the Jordan River.
