Virginia law allows judges to require reckless drivers to install speed-limiting device

A Virginia law that goes into effect on Wednesday allows judges to require people convicted of reckless driving to install a device on their vehicles that prevents them from speeding. 

The device uses GPS and road data to restrict the vehicle from exceeding the speed limit by limiting how fast the car can accelerate, NBC4 Washington reported. 

The law gives judges the option of requiring those convicted of reckless driving to install the devices, in lieu of suspending their license, which can limit their employment opportunities. 

A similar law is in force in Washington, D.C., and Maryland's speed-limiting law will go into effect this fall.
