ADL deletes extremism glossary after backlash over Turning Point USA inclusion
"ADL sells hate," Elon Musk said
The Anti-Defamation League deleted its "Glossary of Extremism and Hate" after backlash over its inclusion of Turning Point USA in the list.
Elon Musk and several Republicans criticized the ADL for listing Turning Point USA, founded by Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last month at Utah Valley University, in its glossary.
The entry, according to a screenshot posted on X by Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna on Monday, said that since Kirk founded the group, he "moved further to the right and has promoted numerous conspiracy theories about election fraud and Covid-19 and has demonized the transgender community. Kirk also promotes Christian nationalism: the idea that Christians should dominate the government and other areas of life in the US."
Musk replied to Luna's post on Monday, writing, "ADL sells hate."
The ADL on Tuesday said it was deleting the glossary.
"With over 1,000 entries written over many years, the ADL Glossary of Extremism has served as a source of high-level information on a wide range of topics for years. At the same time, an increasing number of entries in the Glossary were outdated. We also saw a number of entries intentionally misrepresented and misused. Moreover, our experts have continued to develop more comprehensive resources and innovative ways to provide information about antisemitism, extremism and hate," the ADL posted on X.
"At ADL, we always are looking for how we can and should do things better. That's why we are moving to retire the Glossary effectively immediately. This will allow ADL to explore new strategies and creative approaches to deliver our data and present our research more effectively. It will keep us focused on ensuring we do what we do best: fighting antisemitism and hate in the most impactful ways possible."
On Wednesday, FBI Director Kash Patel cut the bureau's ties to the ADL. Former FBI Director James Comey established ties with the ADL in 2017.
"James Comey wrote 'love letters' to the ADL and embedded FBI agents with them - a group that ran disgraceful ops spying on Americans," Patel posted on X. "That era is OVER. This FBI won’t partner with political fronts masquerading as watchdogs."
