Arizona Democratic Gov. Hobbs plans to pick Republican running mate in reelection bid: report

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs is reportedly picking a Republican as her running mate in her bid for reelection.

Republican John Giles, former mayor of Mesa, Ariz., is expected to be announced soon as Hobbs' lieutenant governor nominee, the New York Times reported, citing unnamed sources. Neither Hobbs nor Giles confirmed the governor's choice. 

Hobbs, a low-key Democrat, will be up against Rep. Andy Biggs, who has President Donald Trump's endorsement. Hobbs won a narrow victory four years ago thanks to the backing of moderate Republicans and independents, who have showed less support for hard-line Republican nominees in the past two election cycles. 

A 2022 ballot measure allowed Arizona voters to pick a lieutenant governor on the same ballot as the governor, and the November election will be the first one where the law is in effect.
