With the midterm elections in full swing, the question of whether the Democrats will flip the Republican-controlled House is at the forefront for many American voters.

About four months out from Election Day, polls are pointing to the historic phenomenon of the party in the White House losing seats in the House halfway through the four-year term.

Republicans currently hold 218 seats, Democrats hold 212, one is filled by an independent and four are vacant out of the 435 total seats.

There have been 20 midterm elections since 1946, and in 18 of them, the president's party lost seats in the House. Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Indiana, is concerned about the implications of Democrats regaining a congressional majority.

“If the Democrats get control of the House … we’re going to be right back to investigations and impeachments,” Stutzman told the Just the News, No Noise TV show on Friday. “President Trump’s agenda is going to be bottled up, and they, of course, want to stop President Trump at any turn.”

Scripps News poll on the same day that surveyed 2,000 registered voters June 25 through July 2 found that 39% of American voters plan to support Republican candidates, while 48% look to vote for Democrats. The margin of error was plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

Moreover, a poll by YouGov and The Economist showed 35% of 1,606 U.S. adults – surveyed from June 26-29 – supporting Republicans and 37% favoring Democrats. 11% were undecided, and 16% wouldn’t vote.

The CATO Institute and Morning Consult polled 2,253 adults from June 25-26, finding that 39% of voters would back Republicans, and 45% would support Democrats. The margin of error was plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Additionally, a Quinnipiac University poll that surveyed 1,165 registered voters June 18-22 found that 49% of Americans want to see Democrats take over control of the House, while 42% prefer Republicans maintaining the majority. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

RealClear Polling’s recent 2026 Generic Congressional Vote polls show that Democrats currently have the upper hand on Republicans, with 48.5% saying they’d vote Democrat, while 42.9% said they would vote Republican. That same poll also found that 39% said they’d be more likely to vote for a candidate with a “Democratic socialist” label, 40% said they’d be less likely and 22% weren’t sure.

The Democratic Party has recently seen a rise in democratic-socialist politicians including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, who each took office on Jan. 1.

More recently, democrat-socialist Melat Kiros, defeated longtime Rep. Diana DeGette in a June 30 Democratic congressional primary in the Denver area.

Stutzman encouraged Republicans to “fight,” fix problems, communicate with the American people about solving issues and “not let these Marxists and communists take over the Democrat party, and ultimately take over the country.”
