Ron DeSantis officially announces run for president on Twitter

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially declared his campaign for president in 2024.

DeSantis announced his White House bid on Wednesday night through a video ad on Twitter.

“I’m running for President to lead our great American comeback,” said DeSantis in his first Presidential campaign ad. “We need the courage to lead and the strength to win."

DeSantis also joined a Twitter Spaces with Elon Musk where he staunchly predicted he would be sworn in as the 47th POTUS, adding that when he does, he "will get the job done."

In the livestream, the Governor laid out central issues for his campaign, including typcial agenda items like border security, and energy independence, but also honed in on ending America's "woke mind virus," "restor[ing] integrity" to federal agencies and vowing to "end the culture of losing that has infected the Republican party in recent years."

The Governor submitted paperwork to the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) earlier today prior to his verbal announcement on the social media platform. 

DeSantis had been hinting at a presidential run for the past several months as he traveled to GOP hotspot states including Iowa and New Hampshire.

The Sunshine State’s Governor has been a rising star in the Republican Party, with his response to Covid-19 and “woke” ideology being a key driver to his landslide reelection in 2022.

In 2018, DeSantis won his race by a mere 0.4%. Last year, that margin rose to nearly 20 points. 

Before serving as Florida's governor, DeSantis was a congressman from 2013 to 2018. He is a graduate of both Yale University and Harvard Law School. 

He is the sixth GOP candidate to announce his 2024 presidential bid along with former President Donald Trump, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley.
