NYC Mayor Adams out fundraises Democratic nominee Mamdani over last month, Cuomo falls behind
New York City Mayor Eric Adams raised $1.5 million over the last month, compared to Zohran Mamdani's $852,000, which increased to $1.1 million with public matching funds
New York City Mayor Eric Adams raised more money than Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani over the last month – in their respective bids to become mayor.
Embattled Adams has chosen to run as an independent in the November election, as has former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who last month lost to Mandani in the party primary. He raised $64,000.
During the most recent filing period, from June 10 to July 11, Adams raised $1.5 million, nearly half of which came from outside New York City, The New York Times reported. Among those funds include eight donations he received from Florida on the day of a fundraiser he had there earlier this month with people who are aligned with a Young Republicans group and President Trump. Those eight donations totaled $2,325.
Mamdani, a democratic-socialist, has made some New York business people uneasy with some of his campaign promises, which they see as anti-business. Adams has met with some business and real estate leaders to strategize about how to defeat Mamdani and has received donations from real estate firms.
He has pledged free child care, a $30 minimum wage and a massive tax hike on corporations in the city.
“There’s also a growing concern about what’s at stake if we take a wrong turn,” Adams’ spokesman Todd Shapiro said. “Voters are looking at the alternative and saying, ‘We can’t afford to go backwards.’”
Adams has almost $4.3 million on hand, but he is facing an investigation from the New York City Campaign Finance Board, which has denied him access to public matching funds over campaign finance concerns. The mayor was indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice on five corruption counts last year, but the Trump administration dropped the case.
Despite the better fundraising totals, Adams is far behind both Mamdani, a state assemblyman, and Cuomo in the polls.
Also during the most recent filing period, Mamdani raised $852,000, including $256,000 that is eligible for public matching funds, which effectively brings his total to $1.1 million, according to his campaign. About 45% of the contributions Mamdani has received are from outside New York State. Mamdani has just over $2.6 million on hand.
“Adams and Cuomo have made it clear they are competing to be the champion of the billionaire class, and Donald Trump,” Mamdani spokesman Jeffrey Lerner said. “We saw how that worked out in the primary.”
Cuomo low number is at least in part because he wasn't actively fundraising while he was deciding whether to continue his campaign as an independent in the general election. He released a video on Monday confirming his general election campaign and is expected to start focusing on fundraising. He has almost $1.2 million on hand.
“We had not been fundraising post-primary while we figured out our next steps,” Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi said. “But that changes today.”
Cuomo finished a distant second to Mamdani in the Democratic primary election.
