You Vote: How important is the issue of abortion to you when choosing who to vote for?

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Wednesday said he would oppose a bill being pushed by Democrats to guarantee access to abortion nationwide.

However, while Manchin said the Women's Health Protection Act of 2022 was too broad for him to support, he added he would vote specifically to codify Roe v. Wade into law if such a narrow bill were on the table.

Roe was the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision that established abortion as a constitutional right. A recently leaked draft Supreme Court opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito indicated the nation's highest court would overturn the decision this year, leaving abortion's legality up to individual states to determine.

The draft didn't necessarily represent the justices' final decision, which is expected in the coming weeks. Still, it has brought the issue of abortion to the forefront of the legislative agenda on Capitol Hill, with Democrats saying they'll make it a top election issue this year. Many Republicans, meanwhile, are opposing Democratic efforts to prohibit states from imposing certain restrictions on abortion.
