Maui wildfire death toll climbs to 67, up to 1,000 missing: 'Please hang together'

At least 67 people are dead following the devastating wildfire that scorched the Hawaiian island of Maui.

As many as 1,000 people remain missing on the island, local officials stated on Thursday, according to the Epoch Times. Officials have signaled that a final death toll will not materialize for several more days as searches for missing persons remain ongoing.

Hawaii Democratic Gov. Josh Green on Friday stated that the exact figure would soon become clear, however, saying that "[s]tarting tomorrow, we will see a lot more certainty about how many individuals perished," the Washington Post reported.

In a Twitter video on Friday, Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz confirmed that the Pentagon had promised "any resources that were necessary, appropriate to help with the disaster response." He further indicated that the state would need an emergency appropriations bill and that the damage done was likely to be "in the billions of dollars."

"Please hang together," he urged.

The wildfire was particularly devastating to the town of Lahaina, of which footage has shown little but the scorched remains of the town.
