London's Heathrow airport will be closed all of Friday because it lost power due to a large fire nearby, the airport said in a post on X on Thursday night.

The outage is the result of a transformer in an electrical substation in Hayes catching fire, CNN reported. Hayes is located in West London, and 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters were responding to the blaze, the London Fire Brigade said.

The cause of the fire has not been identified so far, fire officials said, but 150 people were safely evacuated. Firefighters also evacuated 29 people from nearby buildings, and escorted them to safety.

London's Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, said passengers should not travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information.

“Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage,” the airport said. “To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March.”
