President Donald Trump on Monday met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House as part of his broader efforts to stabilize the Middle East.
Al-Sharaa came to power earlier this year by overthrowing the Assad government and Damascus. The victory of his group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led to crackdowns on Christians and other minorities in Syria that had enjoyed the protection of the Assad government.
Trump, for his part, has yet to comment on the results of the meeting, though images suggested that Al-Sharaa was cordially received.
