Trump pressures Senate GOP to fire Senate parliamentarian: 'Get smart'
The Senate parliamentarian is responsible for making sure legislation complies with Senate rules.
President Donald Trump on Wednesday pressured the Senate to fire Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough, asserting that she was obstructing Republican legislative efforts.
McDonough has held the post since the Obama administration. The Senate parliamentarian is responsible for making sure legislation complies with Senate rules. She has previously made revisions or forced changes to Republican bills before permitting them to pass with a simple majority vote.
"Over the years, she has been brutal to Republicans, but not so to the Dumocrats — So why has she not been replaced?" Trump posted on Truth Social. "There are many fair people who would be qualified for that vital job. The Republicans play a very soft game compared to the Dumocrats. It is their single biggest disadvantage in politics."
Trump further warned Republicans that Democrats would eliminate the Senate filibuster and blasted them for what he viewed as a naive belief among Republicans that the opposition would not do so.
"The Dumocrats will eliminate the Filibuster on the First Day that they get an opportunity to do so," he added. "The Republicans aren’t doing it because they say the Dumocrats will never do it, but the Republicans are WRONG. Get smart and tough Republicans, or you’ll all be looking for a job much sooner than you thought possible!"
