British Parliamentarians on Monday blasted the British government for sharing a job posting online titled "Sharia Law Administrator," claiming the country should not be promoting a separate judicial system outside the British rule of law.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), which shared the job post, has since removed the posting. The job post was for a sharia council position at the Manchester Community Centre, and required all applicants to have a degree in sharia law and work experience in sharia law-related fields or courts in Muslim countries, according to the Daily Mail

Independent Member of Parliament (MP) Rupert Lowe expressed his anger at the post in a letter to Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall. The posting initially went up last week.

"I am writing to express my absolute alarm and disgust that the Department for Work and Pensions 'Find a Job' platform is currently advertising for a 'Sharia Law Administrator,'" Lowe wrote. "The DWP is promoting and facilitating the embedding of a parallel legal system in the United Kingdom. Sharia law has no place operating as a recognised legal framework within our country. It is fundamentally incompatible with British law, and our very way of life."

Lowe asked the government to tell parliamentarians who approved the posting and requested that the job post be removed.

Other British lawmakers also condemned the post, including Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and Reform member Zia Yusuf. Tory MP Peter Bedford additionally objected to the posting.

"I would be aghast if a politician signed off allowing recruitment for this type of role," Bedford told the Daily Mail. "I suspect, once again, this is the out-of-control civil service creating and implementing policy contrary to democratic authority. This must stop."

A department spokesperson told the outlet that the post was made by an independent charity and not the government, and that the "find a job" platform is utilized by employers from various sectors, not just the government.
