Explosion at Ukraine embassy in Madrid, one reportedly injured in mailroom

An explosion Wednesday at Ukraine's embassy in Madrid injured one employee who was handling mail, the Spanish Interior Ministry said.

The ministry also said the injured individual is being treated for minor injuries, and police are investigating the incident, according to CNN.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko said the injured employee was a "commandant" whose life "is not at risk" from the explosion. 

He also said Ukraine, which has under invasion from Russia since February, has "issued an urgent instruction to step up security at all Ukrainian embassies abroad."

Law enforcement said it is still unknown whether the explosion occurred when the embassy employee attempted to open an envelope or move it.

"Whoever is behind this explosion they will not succeed in intimidating Ukrainian diplomats or stopping their daily work to strengthen Ukraine and to counter Russian aggression," Nikolenko also said. 

Spain, a member of NATO, has assisted Ukraine by sending military equipment to help fight against Russia's invasion.
